From Soft Drinks to Real Estate: How a Looming Water Crisis Affects our World and How to Optimize the Business Opportunity
Thursday, October 23, 2008

Climate change has already turned chronically short fresh water supplies in places like the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa into dire emergencies and precipitated terrible resource conflicts.  As the Southeastern US faces the worst drought in nearly 150 years, Georgia communities are learning that the Third World isn’t the only place tension and upheaval over water resource may be found. Within the US for example, the desert Southwest has contended with shortages for over a century.  This business-focused program will discuss:

  • How is the Water Crisis impacting businesses broadly?
  • What is the impact on key industries such as real-estate development and agri-business in Georgia?
  • How does the cost of water impact us as residents and fellow members in a business community?
  • How are new technologies being used to mitigate the crisis?
  • Where do business opportunities lie to optimize a looming crisis as profitable prevention practices?

Speakers:
After a keynote presentation by world-renowned water expert Laura Shenkar, Founder of the Artemis Project (www.theartemisproject.com), a moderated panel with experts Jeff Seabright, Chief Environmental Officer and Vice President of Environment and Water Resources, The Coca-Cola Company; Jim Jacoby, Chairman and CEO, The Jacoby Group (www.thejacobygroup.com); and Craig Kvien, Chairman, NESPAL (www.nespal.org) will discuss how policy has and will impact business, how business is adapting and how entrepreneurial companies are making a difference.  Candidate technologies for discussion include the latest in ocean desalination, filtration, sterilization irrigation and conservation.
